泼水节是傣族最隆重的节日，也是云南少数民族节日中影响面最大，参加人数最多的节日。泼水节是傣历新年，相当于公历的四月中旬，节日一般持续3至7天。第一天傣语叫“麦日”，与农历的除夕相似；第二天傣语叫“恼日”（空日）；第三天是新年，叫“叭网玛”，竟为岁首，大众把这一天视为最美妙，最吉祥的日子。节日清晨，傣族男女老少就穿上节日盛装，挑着清水，先到佛寺浴佛，接着就开始互相泼水，互祝吉祥、快乐、健壮。大众一边翩翩起舞，一边呼喊“水！水！水！”，鼓锣之声响乇云霄，祝福的水花到处飞溅，场面特别壮观。

西双版纳、德宏傣族的泼水节传说都是“七公主杀火魔”的故事，华坪傣族的泼水节传说故事却独具特色。
相传在很久以前，金沙江边一个聚居在密林深处的傣族村寨，因树林起火，村民处在被大火吞没的危难之中，一个名叫李良的傣家汉子，为保护村庄，不畏危险，冲出火网，从金沙江里挑来一桶桶江水，泼洒山火。
经过一天一夜的劳累，山火终于被泼灭了，村民得救，李良由于劳累把汗流干了，倒在山头上。村民打来清水给李良解渴，但他喝了九十九挑水也解不了渴。后来，李良索性一头扑到江水中，变成一条巨龙，顺江而去。有的说，他变成了一棵大树。
傣族人民为纪念李良，每年农历三月初三这一天，每家房屋清扫一新，撒上青松叶，并在选定的江边或井旁，用绿树搭起长半里长的青棚，棚下撒满厚厚的松针，两旁放上盛满水的水槽，午间太阳当顶时，众人穿行于棚间，相互用青松蘸水洒身，吉祥快乐的水相互泼洒，表示对李良的怀念和对新年的祝福。
这项活动一直延续至今，成为傣族人民辞旧迎新祝福吉祥的节日——泼水节。
